4 Hurlburt Field Airmen die in U-28A crash in Djibouti

Capt Ryan P. Hall from the 319th Special Operations Squadron, Capt Nicholas S. Whitlock and 1st Lt Justin J. Wilkens from the 34th Special Operations Squadron and Senior Airman Julian S. Scholten from the 25th Intelligence Squadron died Feb. 18 when their U-28A was involved in an accident near Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti, located in the Horn of Africa. No other personnel were on board the aircraft.

The U-28 was returning from a mission in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

31st MEU successfully completes Exercise Cobra Gold 2012

Marines and Sailors of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit successfully completed Exercise Cobra Gold 2012 and retrograded onto the USS Tortuga and USS Germantown, Feb. 19.

During the exercise, armed forces from Thailand, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, and South Korea worked alongside the Marines and Sailors of the 31st MEU during a bilateral amphibious assault, mechanized raid, noncombatant evacuation operation and a combined arms live fire exercise, among several other training events.

Marines train, fire at Hijudai Maneuver Area

Marines and sailors with 3rd Battalion, 12th Marine Regiment started the firing portion of Artillery Relocation Training 11-4 at the Hijudai Maneuver Area Feb. 10.

The regiment, part of 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, conducts four artillery relocation training sessions annually at five different locations in mainland Japan to maintain proficiency in its primary mission of providing artillery fire to maneuver units.

3/7 Cavalry gets back to the basics

While many Soldiers from 2nd "Spartan" Heavy Brigade Combat Team, Third Infantry Division, have started to deploy in support of combat operations in Afghanistan, this does not mean an end to the continual training of Soldiers remaining at Fort Stewart.

For the Soldiers of 3rd Squadron, 7th Cavalry, 2HBCT, the extended training time while at Fort Stewart has allowed the squadron to re-focus their training and get back to the basics of what makes up a scout and reconnaissance squadron, according squadron commander, Lt. Col. Lance Varney.

Marines with Company B., Battalion Landing Team 1st Battalion, 4th Marines, 31st MEU, educated their foreign military counterparts on U.S. Marine techniques of MOUT while the Thais themselves meshed into the various attacking and defending squads to get first-hand experience of the training.
